The big fractal goes up in Downtown Albuquerque. Originally created by Rachel Washington, a 5th grader, this vinyl banner measures 20' x 28'!
On Tuesday, Feb 24th, the first Albuquerque Fractal Challenge billboard was installed on the parking garage at 3′d and Silver. The featured fractal was made by the youngest winner of the Fractal Challenge, 5th grader Rachel W. of Onate Elementary. Almost certainly the largest fractal print ever made, this amazing artwork is visible from large parts of downtown Albuquerque. Look for more giant public art fractals soon!
Many thanks to Mayor Martin J. Chavez, the Albuquerque Urban Enhancement Trust Fund and Albuquerque Community Foundation for making the project possible. Thanks also to BGK Albuquerque Property Management for letting us use their building facade!

Ohmigod! I can’t believe how beautiful this is! Congratulations, and thanks for making Albuquerque shine!!!
This is truly beautiful. I know I’m biased because the Rachel that did this is my daughter, but it really is beautiful. I’m so proud of Rachel. Thanks sweetie for sharing your gift with the city in this unique way.
Wow! This is awesome. I can’t wait to see this in person.
Congratulations! How was it decided that this fractal would be the one used?
Good question: We had a panel of nine judges choose the winning fractals. In the end, they selected the top 8 images. When we had identified this parking structure as a candidate site for an installation, we let the building owners choose their favorite from the winners, and Rachel’s is the one they chose.
Hey Jonathan, Here at Cochiti we are looking at the Fractal on the downtown building while we are eating fractals that we grew! A Fractalicious day!
Above comment was made by Ms. Encinias’ class!
cool fractals. i like how u could make your own design and express yourself. congradulations to the winner fractal and good luck this year.
This is so beautiful. Who was the sign company that printed this beautiful sign. Does Rachel’s family get to have this banner when the city is done with it?
Thanks - I think it’s really beautiful too! The banner was printed by Resolution Graphics, who are a great supporter of ours. (www.BigColorPrinting.com if you want your own:)
We’re actually not sure what we’re going to do with the banners when they’re done being displayed. Certainly Rachel could get a piece of it. But it’s huge - a 20′ roll that weighs a few hundred pounds. What would you do with such a thing? I’ve heard of a company that recycles vinyl banners into products like shopping bags, so perhaps we’ll produce some fractal souvenirs like that…
Yes,It really is beautiful and awesome.
