Fractals are SMART: Science, Math and Art!

The Albuquerque Fractal Challenge is Back!

Albuquerque students are invited to participate in our annual fractal design challenge! This is a fun opportunity for the local youth to freely explore the beauty of fractals on their school or home computers. The 9 winning designs will be printed as massive artworks, and put on display for the entire city to see! They will also be included in our First Friday Fractals planetarium show!

Each student may enter only ONE fractal image to the contest. Entries should be sent to the following email address:

To get started, simply download the free “XaoS” software and explore and create the most beautiful fractal artwork you can! Winners will be judged on beauty and originality.

IMPORTANT: Fractals must be submitted with both the image and the parameter file. This allows us to reproduce the image at giant scale if it is selected as a winner. To do so, go the the file menu in XaoS and choose “Save” to save the parameters (filename.xpf), and then choose “Save As” to save as an image (filename.png).

The Fractal Foundation’s educators are available to teach school assemblies describing how to use the “XaoS” program to generate fractal images. Reach out to Hope (at) FractalFoundation.org to schedule an in-school lesson.

Be sure to review the Official Guidelines for tips and rules!
