Watersheds and Rivers

Learn about the fractal nature of rivers, what a watershed is and use your creativity to produce a fractal design

In this exercise, students learn about fractal rivers, create their own watershed using a spray bottle and a plastic trash bag, and discover what a watershed is. This activity wraps up with students creating their own fractal design using pipe cleaners.

Ages:
K – 12

Materials:
Watersheds and Rivers worksheet
Pencil
Garbage bag with edges cut so it is one large rectangle
A few students’ shoes and/or backpacks
Spray bottle with water
Pipe cleaners – some the original length, some cut in half, some cut quarter length

Time:
Approx 45 minutes
